Blackmans Bay is a small town located in Tasmania, Australia. It is situated on the eastern shore of the Derwent River, just south of Hobart. The town is named after George Blackman, an early settler who arrived in the area in 1829.

Early History

Before the arrival of European settlers, Blackmans Bay was home to the indigenous people of Tasmania, known as the Palawa. The area was a major source of food and resources, with the bay providing an abundance of shellfish and fish.

The first European contact with the area was made in 1793 by French explorer Bruni d'Entrecasteaux, who sailed into the Derwent River. However, it was not until the 1820s that permanent settlement began.

George Blackman arrived in the area in 1829 and established a farm, which he named 'Springfield'. The area soon attracted other settlers, who established farms and businesses in the area.

Growth and Development

Blackmans Bay remained a primarily agricultural area throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries. However, with the growth of Hobart and the development of transport links, the area began to change. In the 1930s, the construction of the Southern Outlet, a major road connecting Hobart to the south, provided greater access to the area.

During the mid-20th century, Blackmans Bay began to experience significant growth. The first subdivisions were developed in the 1960s, with new houses being built in the area. The construction of the new Kingston High School in 1966 also led to an increase in the population.

In the 1970s, Blackmans Bay experienced a surge in commercial development, with new shops and businesses opening in the area. The construction of the Blackmans Bay Beachfront Hotel in 1971 was a major development, providing accommodation and entertainment for visitors to the area.

The town is also known for its strong community spirit, with a range of local community groups and events taking place throughout the year.
